Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer
Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer
CD PROJEKT RED has been known for their single player games like The Witcher, but at E3 2018 the company started to mention the possibility of a multiplayer mode in Cyberpunk 2077. Here’s what we know so far.
- A multiplayer mode will likely be added to the game post-launch
No Multiplayer to be Included at Launch
In a June 2018 interview with Eurogamer, CD PROJEKT RED quest designer Patrick Mills said that the company has multiplayer in an R&D stage, but “the game we’re shipping to you, the game you’re going to buy is the single-player experience.” When pressed on the question, Mills said that post-launch multiplayer may be coming but that there are “no promises.” This multiplayer R&D was clarified as being both for Cyberpunk 2077 and other game projects.
Multiplayer Focused Developer Assisting With Development
In October 2018 CD PROJECT RED announced a “long term partnership” with Digital Scapes, a Vancouver-based video game developer founded by former members of BioWare, Radical Entertainment, and Relic. Digital Scapes has expertise in “AAA multiplayer console and PC game development,” and it was explained that the company would specifically be working on Cyberpunk 2077. Considering previous comments about a potential multiplayer mode, it seems likely that Digital Scapes will be contributing to a post-launch multiplayer mode.
Digital Scapes previously worked on Techland’s Dying Light, a 2015 survival horror first-person shooter that gained popularity for its cooperative and PvP online multiplayer modes. The company is mostly known for its technical expertise, so it’s unclear whether their experience with Dying Light will have any influence on the design of Cyberpunk 2077‘s multiplayer.
